Preparing for Your MRI

What to Expect
• Before entering the MRI room, you will need to complete and sign a screening questionnaire for your safety and protection. Some surgical implants make it unsafe to enter the magnetic field, so we ask your cooperation in completing this form as accurately as possible.

. Materials that may be attracted by the magnet, including your watch, credit cards, coins, keys, bobby pins, safety pins and pocketknives, are stored in a locker for safekeeping.

• The MRI machine makes a muffled knocking sound while scanning. You are encouraged to bring some music

to listen to. It will help relax you and make the time pass more quickly.

. Patients who experience claustrophobia (the fear of tight places) may require sedation as ordered by their physician. Patients who choose to bring a friend, or parents who wish to remain with their children may do so, provided that they complete the required screening procedure.

• Patients with the following devices should avoid MRI scans: pacemaker, defibrillator, certain aneurysm clips and implanted electromechanical aids. Other devices may be safe after an extended time, therefore, it is important to inform the technologist of your individual circumstances.

• Patients who have previously worked with metal (i.e. welders, machinists, metal workers) are carefully screened for previous metal injury to the eyes. Patients who have had prior injuries to the eyes involving metal, or those workers who do not wear eye protection, may require an x-ray of the eyes to eliminate the possibility of any metal fragments.
